How the Millage Supports the Library
Thank you to the Ferndale community for supporting the library millages. This funding will help the library maintain the services residents rely on while addressing important building and technology needs.
The millage supports two areas of library operations:
- Capital improvements will help keep the building safe, functional, comfortable, and up to date.
- Operating support will help preserve seven-day service, maintain staffing, and sustain collections, programs, digital resources, and outreach.
Planned Capital Improvements
The library’s current capital priorities include the projects below. This section will be updated as projects are planned, scheduled, completed, or adjusted.
Repair/replace the geothermal HVAC system
Status: Planning and assessment will start in summer 2027

Installed around 2011, the geothermal heating and cooling system is one of the library’s most significant aging infrastructure needs.
Latest update: The Library Board will review and discuss options and establish a tentative timeline beginning in 2027.
Update the building’s exterior and interior finishes
Status: Planning and assessment will start in 2027
Last updated: September, 2026
Planned work includes repairing or replacing exterior metal trim that supports windows, green roof, and other exterior areas. Much of the trim dates back to the original installation in the 2008-2010 renovation project.

Expand technology infrastructure
Status: Starting 2026
Last updated: September 2026
Funding will support an upgrade to the building’s high-speed Ethernet capacity, which was last substantially updated around 2012.
Latest update: Updating electrical connections from our main server to Ethernet cable switches, improving speed of public computers and our catalog-access computers.
Other current/forthcoming tech expansions include: card readers for printing/scanning and faxing, as well as instant-access digital library cards and greater access to eBooks and audiobooks.
Upgrade furniture
Status: Starting 2026
Last updated: September 2026
Replacing outdated furniture will help keep public spaces functional, comfortable, and welcoming.
Latest update: New furniture will be rolled out over the next six months (2026-2027).
Daily Operations
The renewed operations millage will help the library maintain its current seven-day schedule and retain adequate professional staff.
The library is open:
Mon - Thur: 10 am - 8 pm
Fri: 10 am - 6 pm
Sat-Sun: 12 pm - 5 pm

The renewed operations millage will also support:
- Books and other physical materials
- E-books, audiobooks, and digital borrowing
- Literacy programs for children and students
- Community programs and events
- Outreach services, including services for older adults
